In this new fifth edition of Social Welfare in Canadian Society, author Rosalie Chappell provides a critical look at chronic and emerging social issues, as well as the diverse and sometimes confounding influences that have shaped them. Readers will gain an appreciation for the impact of government policy and globalization as they come to see the importance of the helping professional in the midst of today’s trends. Current and authoritative, this edition’s coverage paints a vibrant picture of Canada’s ever-changing social welfare environment.

Features

  • *NEW* Includes documents that have significant implications for at-risk populations in terms of legislation, social benefits, and full inclusion in Canadian society, such as The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: In Brief, and the Statement of Apology by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
  • *NEW* Prepares readers for career opportunities in social service sectors and agencies by providing a wealth of information on how social services are delivered and introducing the types of organizations they are likely to work in; how social workers (and related helpers) help people, organizations, and communities achieve their social development goals; the impact of globalization on domestic approaches (updated material in Appendix B); and applications of practice to specific and at-risk populations like low-income and marginalized groups, children, the elderly, and Aboriginal peoples.
  • *NEW* Includes coverage of anti-oppressive approaches in social work in Chapters 9 and 13.
  • *NEW* Includes new material on emerging (or increasing) social problems and social trends in Canada today, including income inequality (Chapter 4 and Appendix B), declining quality of life (Chapters 1 and 4), racism and marginalization (Chapter 13), poverty (Chapter 9), and an aging population (Chapter 11).
  • *NEW* Provides increased coverage of the historical context in Chapter 3, which includes more historical information on the early development of social welfare in Canada, and in Appendix A, which now lists the chronological occurrence of events that have shaped Canada's current attitudes and approaches to social welfare since the mid-nineteenth century.
  • Reflects the unique way in which Canada responds to the social welfare needs of its citizens, helping readers appreciate how certain social issues come to the forefront at different times in history and in response to global and domestic events and public attitudes.
  • Reflects the reality of programs and approaches to social welfare across Canada, and the diverse approaches to improving the quality of life for Canadians, by providing profiles of a wide range of social agencies and programs across Canada.
  • Offers updated statistics, theories, and program information related to the important issue of poverty in a new Chapter 9, which aims to give readers a better understanding of poverty and poverty interventions in Canada.
  • Provides examples, discussion, and critical analyses of social welfare programs, legislation, and processes in Canada, including updated statistics and research findings specific to social development and social and economic well-being in Canada.
  • Introduces a variety of current social issues and problems that challenge the social well-being of Canadians—such as how child care services should be provided—and aims to help readers more wholly analyze content and appreciate the complexity of issues related to social welfare in Canada, such as why governments might support some initiatives over others.
